Battle of the Beltway - Teams that competed

St. Charles High School, Waldorf, MD

St. Charles High School returns the majority of its players due to the fact that there were no seniors on the roster one year ago. St. Charles Football will stir things up this season and seem to be set to embark on setting a winning tradition for this young Football program. The core of young skilled position players are  developing valuable chemistry amongst each other. The Spartens look to use the Battle of the Beltway Tournament to launch their march to becoming a power house in the State of Maryland. St. Charles looking to make a run towards their District Title.

North Point High School, Waldorf, MD

After a 9-2 season and a ranking amongst the top 25 teams in Maryland, the Eagles look to continue beating teams with their stealthy defense. North Point only allowed their opponent to double digit scoring in just four games last season. Cornerbacks Perrin Turner and Jesse Stauffer alongside linebacker Keisean Wilson (offer from Old Dominion) return on defense. After losing their quarterback, top three rushers and top five receivers the Eagles will need new players to step up to for the offense that averaged 45 points a year ago. Wide receivers Kelsey Nail and Devonte Young (offers from Pittsburgh and Iowa) are expected to be big influences in the passing game as well as tight end Malik Brown (offer from Cornell).

Chopticon High School, Morganza, MD

A 7-4 season was a step in the right direction for the Braves , the 2015 season they look to keep the program headed in towards winning a State Title. Chopticon brings back their second-leading rusher, third-leading receiver and two defenders with over 60 tackles each. Brandon Blackwell (being recruited by NCAA Div. I schools) will lead the run game for the Braves. Blackwell averaged over eight yards per carry a season ago and has the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Riley McMullen is expected to be the go to wide receiver in the passing game and linebacker Dalton Wylie and defensive end James Holt lead the charge on defense.

Hayfield High School, Alexandria, VA

After having winning records in five of the last six seasons, the Hawks look to continue the trend in 2015. Last season, Hayfield averaged 37 points per game and built a seven-game win streak. The 2015 season will bring in the new era for new Head Coach Eric Henderson, a veteran coach who will bring discipline and excitement to a very talented Hayfield Hawk Team. The Hawks look to test their offense against some of the region’s best programs and will be a formidable opponent in the Northern Virginia Region area.

Lackey High School, Indian Head, MD

Not only have the Chargers won 16 games in the previous two seasons, but they are bringing back their second-leading rusher and third-leading receiver. Lackey is looking for their next quarterback but there are plenty of weapons offensively that will make his job that much easier. On the defensive side, junior linebacker Nathan Proctor returns. He recorded 48 tackles and 5 sacks one season ago. Impact players to watch on both sides of the ball will be Corterris Simpson(WR/S)  and Josh Bannister(RB/S).

Lake Braddock High School, Burke, VA

Finishing the previous season ranked 22nd in Virginia, the Bruins are another strong contender for the Battle of the Beltway title. Lake Braddock has strung together 30 wins over the last three seasons and has not lost at home during the past two. The Bruins travel to St. Charles High School with high aspirations of winning the Virginia 6 State Title.

Yorktown High School, Arlington VA – Contact

Head Coach Bruce Hanson looks to lead the Patriots to their eighth straight winning record this fall. Yorktown brings back a core of talented players that look to build on their 8-4 record from the previous year. The Battle of the Beltway could be just what the Patriots need to build some momentum heading into the 2015 season.

West Springfield High School, Springfield, VA

Quarterback Peter Muskett, leading receiver Darean Robertson and the Spartans top three rushers headline the returners for the team entering the upcoming season. Muskett, who passed for over 1,100 yards last season, will be one of the most exciting quarterbacks to watch in the Battle of the Beltway. On defense, Thomas Salvato returns after recording 90 tackles just a season ago. West Springfield brings in very good chemistry on offense and will have the potential to score a lot points in the 2015 regular season.

Patuxent High School, Lusby, MD

The Panthers were just one victory short from winning a 2A South Region title in the 2014 season. Patuxent has won 38 games over the last four seasons and looks to avenge their latest loss in the upcoming campaign. With three of their top five rushers and two of their top four receivers returning from a year ago, the Panthers will continue to have a high power offense. WR/DB Jared Massengill (being recruited by Old Dominion, William and Mary, VMI and Stony Brook) and defensive end Juan Watkins (recruited by NCAA Div. I schools) will be impact players for Patuxent. Massengill had 29 catches for 353 yards and a touchdown while posting 105 tackles and Watkins posted 75 tackles, respectively, over the course of last season. WR/DB Greg Leonard (being recruited by Albany, VMI, Yale and Toledo) and RB/SS Chris for the Panthers.

Gonzaga High School, Washington D.C.

The Eagles finished the season with a 10-3 record and won the Washington, D.C. Championship for the first time since 1959. Gonzaga is another team in the Battle of the Beltway that prides itself on defense. In the 2014 season, the Eagles allowed less than 14 points per game. Linebacker Kyle Taylor (offers from Big Ten and ACC schools) and defensive tackle Nasheed Bridgewater (offers from NCAA Div. I schools) are the two key players of defense. Junior Sam Brown will take over the quarterback position in the coming fall and will look to build chemistry with receiver Max Fisher and the rest of the Gonzaga receiver unit in tournaments this summer.

Huntingtown High School, Huntingtown, MD

The Hurricanes have built a very strong program that has strung together 51 wins in the last four seasons. However, a 7-4 record a season ago was the weakest of those four years. Kevin Gilligan looks to use the Battle of the Beltway to build more chemistry in his program and light a fire heading into the upcoming season.

McKinley Technical Institute, Washington, D.C.

The Trainers look to use the 7on7U Battle of the Beltway to help bounce back from a 5-6 record last season. McKinley returns quarterback Derrick Taylor and top rusher, Aizsha Horne, but will need new players to step up in the receiving game. Look for senior wide receiver Tyler Castle to step up into the star receiver role for the Trainers. McKinley also lost their top five tacklers on defense and has those shoes to fill. The Battle of the Beltway will be a great way Taylor to build chemistry with Castle and the other receivers and for the Trainers to tune up their defense.

Woodrow Wilson High School, Washington, D.C.

A 7-5 season left the Tigers ranked 8th in the Washington D.C. area. However, the upcoming season shows a lot of promise for Woodrow Wilson. Key returners for the Tigers include quarterback Steve Williams, top rusher Abdul Adams and leading receiver Navon Prince. This high power offense will be one of the most talented in the tournament and it will be interesting to see what other programs can keep up.

Calvin Coolidge High School, Washington, D.C.

The Colts look to use 7on7 tournaments to continue to build their program. First year head coach Steven Scott looks to turn the program around and be a perennial power house in the division. There are plenty of young players for him to work with and the future looks bright for Calvin Coolidge.

C.H Flowers High School, Springdale, MD

After a disappointing season in 2014, former NFL linebacker Cato June has been appointed the new coach for the Jaguars heading into the 2015 season. June was the leading tackler on the 2006-07 Super Bowl XLI Champion Indianapolis Colts. He played seven seasons in the NFL for the Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Houston Texans and Chicago Bears and made one Pro Bowl appearance over the course of his career. Coach June is bringing his on field football experience and work ethic to instill in his talented players to bring C.H Flowers back to winning titles for years to come.
